Jan is a class 2 coach with thirty-six years of experience. He himself has multiple participations in the finals of the national championship in 1978-1985 in the 800 m, 1500 m, 5000 m and 3000 m races. He started athletics in his native Šumperk and came to Opava through the Vítkovice section, where he has been working until today.
His relationship to athletics was influenced by Emil Zátopek, Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett.
